Professor Thomas A. Berfield

Dr. Thomas Berfield is an Associate Professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of Louisville. His research focuses using advanced experimental mechanics methods for assessing the mechanical behavior of complex materials systems, particularly multifunctional and additive manufactured materials.

During the past year on sabbatical, Dr. Berfield spent 2 months as a Guest Research Associate on-site at NIST, Boulder working with the Fatigue and Fracture Group studying residual stress influences on the fatigue performance of additive manufactured Ti-6Al-4V. In addition, Dr. Berfield represents the University of Louisville as a member of the Structural Reliability Partnership, an alliance organized between industry, academia, and national laboratories that targets best practices for mitigating failure in critical infrastructure. Dr. Berfield also actively collaborates with the Naval Surface Warfare Center- Crane Division in a temporary faculty appointment role.
