Dr. Berfield is the recipient of a 2020 DURIP award from the Office of Naval Research. This award will fund new major equipment for the AMIST facility, specifically a Wire Electrical Discharge Machining unit. This machine is used for advanced machining of metal structure in a nearly stress-free manner.
This equipment will facilitate experimental residual stress measurements in AM components. In addition, it will be used for excising specimens from bulk parts for microstructure and mechanical performance characterization.
